Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento introduce e discute dei legami fra lingua, identità e potere in riferimento all'inglese nel mondo, soprattutto nelle aree anglofone di Asia e Africa. Il tema tratta della diffusione e della variazione diatopica della lingua inglese nel mondo, con particolare riferimento alle varietà dell'inglese in Asia e Africa, e mira a consentire agli studenti di riconoscere le principali varietà della lingua inglese sia per quanto concerne gli aspetti linguistici e stilistici sia per quanto riguarda le implicazioni legate ad ambiti quali identità, potere, discorso, genere, etnia. Il livello di competenza linguistica atteso in uscita del corso completo (Modulo 1 + Modulo 2) è C1 del Quadro Comune Europeo di Riferimento per le Lingue per quanto concerne sia le abilità ricettive sia le abilità produttive. Il lettorato di riferimento mira a rafforzare le competenze linguistiche in inglese in diverse aree attraverso attività di varia tipologia (comprensione del testo, esercizi su grammatica e lessico, produzione di testi di carattere argomentativo).
The course introduces the interrelated themes of English language, identity and power in the world, with particular reference to the Anglophone contexts of Asia and Africa, and aims to enable students to identify the main varieties of English reflecting on both linguistic and stylistic aspects as well as the implications concerning aspects such as identity, power, discourse, gender, ethnicity. The expected level of competence at the end of the entire course (Module 1 + Module 2) is C2 (CEFR) with regard to both receptive and productive skills. The lettorato course aims to reinforce English language competence in various areas through different activities (e.g. reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary exercises, argumentative compositions).

CONOSCENZA E CAPACITÀ DI COMPRENSIONE: Al termine del modulo, gli studenti gli studenti devono possedere conoscenza e capacità di identificare, esporre e discutere contenuti di tipo specialistico sui temi di lingua, identità e potere in riferimento all'inglese nel mondo, soprattutto nelle aree anglofone di Asia e Africa.
CAPACITÀ DI APPLICARE CONOSCENZA E COMPRENSIONE, AUTONOMIA DI GIUDIZIO e ABILITÀ COMUNICATIVE: Al termine del modulo, gli studenti sapranno analizzare elementi lessicali, stilistici e morfosintattici di varie tipologie testuali e sviluppare proprie considerazioni critiche utilizzando appropriata terminologia descrittiva; nell'analisi e nel commento dei testi, faranno uso degli strumenti critici e bibliografici presentati a lezione.
CAPACITÀ DI APPRENDIMENTO: Al termine del modulo, gli studenti sapranno utilizzare alcuni strumenti bibliografici (manuali, dizionari, siti) dedicati alle aree affrontate dal corso, con particolare riferimento alle aree asiatiche e africane.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: By the end of the module students will be able to know, identify, present and discuss the main issues of English language, identity and power in the world, with a particular focus on Asia and Africa.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, MAKING JUDGEMENTS and COMMUNICATION SKILLS: By the end of the module students will be able to analyse lexical, morphosyntactical and stylistic elements of various text-types and will develop their own critical judgments by using appropriate descriptive terminology. In their practical work, student will be using critical and bibliographical tools.
LEARNING SKILLS: By the end of the module, students will be able to use some bibliographical tools (manuals, dictionaries, websites) concerning the themes of the course, with a particular focus on Asia and Africa.

Modalità di insegnamento
L'insegnamento relativo al modulo 1 (6 cfu) si sviluppa in un ciclo di lezioni della durata di 36 ore e richiede la partecipazione attiva degli studenti attraverso esercizi, attività e presentazione di progetti su aspetti specifici dei temi illustrati a lezione. I lavori presentati dagli studenti con regolare frequenza concorreranno alla determinazione del voto finale. Tutte le lezioni sono tenute interamente in lingua inglese e includeranno la partecipazione di esperti e studiosi per attività seminariali.
IN CONSIDERAZIONE DELL'ATTUALE EMERGENZA SANITARIA, L'INSEGNAMENTO E' GESTITO IN MODALITA' TELEMATICA ATTRAVERSO LA PIATTAFORMA MOODLE.
This is a 36-hour module that requires the active partecipation of students through tasks, presentations and project work on selected aspects of the course topics. Students' in-class presentations, papers and project work will count towards the final exam mark. All classes will be in English and will include talks and seminars given by experts and scholars.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
L'esame sia per il Modulo 1 (6 cfu) sia per l'esame completo (Modulo 1 + Modulo 2, 12 cfu) include una parte scritta di lettorato sulle competenze linguistiche, e una parte di tipo orale con il docente, che mira a saggiare la capacità di presentare, discutere e analizzare i principali concetti relativi ai temi di lingua, identità e potere, in particolare nelle aree anglofone di Asia e Africa. Sono previste prove in itinere (presentazioni, relazioni, tesine) per gli studenti frequentanti.
Si ricorda che nel caso di esame da 12 cfu, è necessario sostenere uno dei due moduli come ultima parte, mentre nel caso di esame da 6 cfu, è necessario sostenere prima il lettorato e poi la parte relativa al modulo del docente.

The exam for Module 1 (6 credits) as well s the full exam (Module 1 + Module 2, 12 credits) is made up of two parts: 1) a written exam (lettorato), which is connected with the Lettorato course and assesses language competence, and 2) an oral exam, which aims to test the capacity of students to present, discuss and analyse the main notions concerning English language, identity and power, in particular in the Anglophone contexts of Asia and Africa. Students who attend the course regularly will be able to take continuous assessment (project work, seminar reports, presentations).
Students are reminded that in case of 12-credit exam, they have to take one of the two modules as the last part of the exam, whilst in case of 6-credit exam, they have to take the lettorato part first and then the exam with the instructor.

L'insegnamento intende affrontare da una prospettiva interdisciplinare gli intrecci tematici relativi a lingua, identità e potere, soprattutto nei contesti anglofoni (in particolare Asia e Africa), parallelamente a una serie di argomenti fondamentali quali il ruolo dell'inglese come lingua globale/franca, il rapporto fra lingua, discorso e identità, le principali caratteristiche delle varietà diatopiche di inglese nel mondo, i collegamenti tra lingua e aspetti sociali, culturali e politici del potere, le realizzazioni linguistiche in riferimento a etnia, genere, inclusione/esclusione in diversi ambiti discorsivi e testuali.
Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the course focuses on the intersections between language, identity and power, particularly in the Anglophone contexts of Asia and Africa, along with a series of topics such as the role of English as a lingua franca/global language, the relationship between language, discourse and identity, the main features of World Englishes, the connections between language and the social, cultural and political aspects of power, the articulations of language with regard to ethnicity, gender, inclusion/exclusion across discourses and within various text-types.

Gli studenti che necessitano 12 cfu devono sostenere gli esami relativi al lettorato, al modulo 1 e al modulo 2.

ITERAZIONE ESAME:
Chi volesse iterare l'esame di Lingua (Lingua inglese C) può scegliere tra il modulo I (Prof. Adami) o il modulo II, o concordare un programma specifico con il docente. Il voto finale sarà dato dalla media del voto del lettorato precedentemente sostenuto e del voto del modulo di Lingua Inglese. Sarà il docente del modulo di Lingua (il Prof. Adami o il docente del modulo II) a occuparsi della registrazione.Students who need 12 credits have to take the following exam parts: lettorato + module 1 + module 2.
