Obiettivi formativi
Il corso ha carattere monografico e intende introdurre lo studente a problematiche e metodologie dello studio della letteratura arabo-islamica di epoca classica e post-classica. Obiettivo del corso è la lettura e traduzione di testi inerenti la storia di Caino e Abele, anche in forma seminariale, tratte da differenti versioni arabe.
The course is monographic and intends to introduce the student to the problems and methods of the Arab-Islamic classical and post-classical literature. The aim of the course is the reading and translation of traditions on Cain and Abel, also in the form of seminars, taken from different Arabic versions.

Al termine del corso lo studente conosce problematiche e metodologie riguardanti la formazione, lo sviluppo e la variazione di una storia e di un motivo letterario nell'ambito della tradizione letteraria arabo-islamica.
Irisultati dell’apprendimento verranno verificati attraverso una prova orale nella quale gli studenti dovranno dimostrare di essere in grado leggere e tradurre correttamente i testi tradotti e discussi a lezione.
At the end of the course the student knows problems and methodologies concerning the story of a long and complex literary tradition. He is also capable of understanding the main issues discussed in the bibliography.
The course consists of an oral exam in which students must demonstrate that they can read and translate correctly the texts translated and discussed in class.

Attraverso un esame orale in cui si richiede la lettura e la traduzione di tutti i testi letti e analizzati a lezione, nonché attraverso un approfondimento di tutti i temi trattati nella bigliografia fornita a lezione.

Il corso ha per argomento la storia di Caino e Abele (Qissat Habil wa-Qabil) e, più in generale, la diffusione del motivo letterario dell’ostilità tra fratelli (al-ikhwa al-a‘da’) nella letteratura araba classica e contemporanea.
Durante il corso si tradurranno varie versioni della storia di Caino e Abele, tratte da opere di diversi generi letterari: dal Corano, a opere di esegesi, storie dei profeti, manuali d’adab, opere di mukafa’a, nonché alcune storie della tradizione folclorica e della letteratura araba contemporanea. La lettura e l'analisi di questi brani in lingua originale (arabo) consentirà di affrontare problematiche riguardanti la ricezione e la trasformazione del motivo nei diversi generi ed è epoche in cui è attestato.
Nella sua prima parte il corso intende presentare il conflitto tra Caino e Abele secondo la versione coranica (Cor. 5:27-32), le opere di esegesi e le storie dei profeti (Qisas al-Anbiya’). A lezione si tradurranno brani tratti dalle Qiṣaṣ al-Anbiyā’ di al-Tha‘abi (1036) e al-Kisa’i (ca. 1100). Si analizzeranno inoltre alcune varianti (rielaborazioni di origine giudeo-cristiana) attestate nelle fonti storiografiche, in particolare in Tabari (923), al-Mas‘udi (957) e Ya‘qubi (897/8), che hanno avuto particolare importanza per la diffusione della storia in opere di carattere più strettamente letterarie.
Nella seconda parte il corso intende presentare il motivo dell’dell’ostilità tra fratelli attraverso storie presenti in opere di carattere strettamente letterario. Si tradurranno brani tratti da opere di adab, come l’‘Uyun al-Akhbar di Ibn Qutayba (889) che dedica un intero capitolo a storie di ostilità tra fratelli, e del genere della ricompensa, come il Farag ba‘da al-Shidda di al-Tanukhi (994) e al-Mukafa’ah di Ibn Al-Dayah (951).
Un’ultima parte del corso è dedicata all’analisi della trasformazione del motivo e ai suoi adattamenti contemporanei. Si tradurranno alcuni passi tratti da Awlad haratina del romanziere egiziano Nagib Mahfuz ( 2006) e dall’opera teatrale Malhamat al-sarab del siriano Sa‘dallah Wannus (1997).
The course concerns the story of Cain and Abel (Qissat Habil wa-Qabil) and, more generally, the analysis of the literary motif of the hostility between brothers (al-ikhwa al-a‘da’) in classical and contemporary Arabic literature.
During the course, the students will translate and analyze various versions of the story of Cain and Abel from works of different literary genres, namely from the Koran, Koranic exegesis, stories of the prophets, works of adab, mukafa’a’s works, as well as some versions of the story from Arabic contemporary literature. The reading of the texts in the original language will allow to deal with various issues that regard the reception of the literary motif in different genres and eras in which it is attested.
In the first part, the course aims to present the conflict between Cain and Abel in accordance with the Qur’anic version (Cor 5:27-32), the works of exegesis and the stories of the Prophets (Qisas al-Anbiya’). Students will translate excerpts from the Qisas al-Anbiya’ by al-Tha‘labi (d. 1036) and al-Kisa’i (ca. 1100). They also analyze some variants (reworkings of Judeo-Christian origin) attested in historical sources, particularly in al-Tabari (d. 923), al-Mas‘udi (d. 957) and Ya‘qubi (d. 897/8), which had particular importance for the diffusion of the story in literary works.
In the second part, students analyze the literary motif of the hostility between brothers and fratricide, through stories present in strictly literary works. They translate excerpts from the works of adab, such as ‘Uyun al-Akhbar by Ibn Qutayba (d. 889), which devotes an entire chapter to the stories of hostility between the brothers, Faraj ba‘da al-Shidda by al-Tanukhi (d. 994), and al-al-Mukafa’ah by Ibn Al-Dayah (d. 951).
The last part of the course is devoted to the analysis of the transformation of the literary motif and its contemporary adaptations. Students will translate some passages from Awlad haratina by the Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz (d. 2006) and from the opera Malhamat al-sarab by the Syrian Sa‘dallah Wannus (d. 1997).

Il corso di Filologia semitica – Laurea triennale dell’a.a. 2014-2015 – affronterà la lettura di testi della tradizione siriaca a giudaica sulla storia di Caino e Abele.
È previsto un seminario interdisciplinare sull'argomento utile per la preparazione dell’esame.
The course is also valid for students of Arabic Literature II of Lingua e Culture dell'Asia e dell'Africa.
Students who cannot attend classes may ask the teacher for substitutive programs.
The course of Semitic Philology - Bachelor of A. A. 2014-2015 - will address the reading of texts of the Syriac tradition in Jewish relating the story of Cain and Abel.
